Can you tell the difference between Moissanite and a Lab Grown Diamond?

Can you tell the difference between Moissanite and a Lab Grown Diamond?

Yes.

This may not be what you wanted to hear but let me explain!

Moissanite and Diamonds, while VERY VERY similar in appearance, do have some notable differences IF you know what you are looking for and/or IF you have one of each side-by-side. That said, given that Lab Diamonds are real Diamonds (just grown and not mined) the same exact statement applies to mined Diamonds as well.

When it comes to cutting Moissanite into gemstones, the same facet patterns as Diamonds can be applied, but because they are two completely different gemstones, the same final appearance is not always translated perfectly. For example, specifically when it comes to Oval, Radiant, and Pear shaped stones, when we try to cut Moissanite the same exact way we would cut a Diamond, the Moissanite stones tend to come out more 'blurry' or 'foggy' looking because of the different way this gemstone reacts to light entering and leaving the stones. If you take a look at the photo below you can see a comparison between a Lab Diamond (bottom) and 'diamond cut' Moissanite (top).Lab Diamond vs Moissanite

The stones are the exact same shape overall but have a very different appearance to their facets. The Lab Diamond appears to have a more defined and crisp look to it while the Moissanite is a lot less sharp and almost looks to be a bit 'blurry'... can you see it? This Moissanite cut is often referred to as a 'diamond cut' or sometimes 'crushed ice' and is attempting to better mimic the most classic way that a diamond oval is cut, however, as you can see, it does not translate perfectly. That is why we more-so recommend a 'brilliant cut' when it comes to Ovals and Radiant cuts specifically when shopping around for a Moissanite because it has a cleaner, sharper appearance. If you need a further explanation or more visuals to explain this information please email us at info@ringcometrue.com any time and we can answer any questions you might have! It's confusing, we know!

The Moissanite stone shapes that have the 'most similar' appearance to that of a Diamond are: Round, Emerald, Asscher, OEC, and Antique Cushion (OMC). However, please understand that Moissanite and Diamond will always have some visual differences between them because, simply put, they are not the same gemstone and never will be. If you prefer the look of a Diamond, then the only way to get it is to purchase a Diamond.
